I remember Bell Atlantic having their strike. That killed Covad at the time, who was rolling out DSL where it could. The last mile installations were getting essentially killed by the strike. Remember hearing 3 months, then several years. Also, didn't help Bell Atlantic suing Covad about a DSL patent.

I had ISDN due to the some good stock market $$ at the time, after Cable, been good ever since.
